Mansory BMW 7-Series

Mansory BMW 7-Series
Mansory BMW 7-Series

Mansory is back in our attention with their newest tuning package for the BMW 7 Series which includes both performance and many styling upgrades. First, design-wise, the new 7 Series received a new body kit with a more refined front bumper with LED daytime running lights and a new carbon grille, a rear roof spoiler and a new rear apron with an integrated diffuser and stainless steel quad pipes for the new sport exhaust system. Next, a new set of 10×22″ alloys wrapped in 265/35R22 tires up front and 295/30R22 tires in the rear complete the new exterior look.

For the car’s performances, the Swiss tuners offer an upgrade kit for both the 750i and the 760Li. The 750i received an ECU remap and a sport air filter that will take the 4.4L twin turbo V8 to a total power output of 490PS/483 HP and 720 Nm of torque, 82 PS/81 HP and 120 Nm of torque more than the standard version. The 760Li went through the same upgrades and now the 6.0L twin turbo V12 is able to produce 640 PS/631 HP and 920 Nm of torque, instead of the standard 544 PS/537 HP and 750 Nm of torque.

The interior of the Mansory BMW 7-Series received a new sport steering wheel, leather and Alcantara upholstery and wood or carbon trims.

New 2012 BMW 528i to Get Turbo Four-Cylinder

2011_bmw_5-series_r34_lt_923101_717.jpg

The entry-level 2012 BMW 5 Series will switch to a 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected four-cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's the same horsepower as the current car's 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-6, but 30 additional lb-ft of torque.

Power is certainly impressive, but this is clearly a move made for the sake of fuel economy. Turbocharging, direct injection, less weight, brake energy regeneration, an ECO mode, the eight-speed automatic and auto stop/start technology will result in a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy over the current 528i's already pretty impressive 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined.

As BMW has completely thrown its naming convention out the window, the new entry-level 5er will not be the 520i, but instead remain the 528i. Wouldn't want your car to sound less fancy than your neighbors. Nor would you want to know your $50,000 luxury sedan has a ... gulp ... four banger. I say who cares, good power is good power, and the current 528i is not a slow car. The new engine should make it better regardless of how many cylinders it has. More info on the engine after the jump.

The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder will utilize much of the same technologies as the 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder found in BMW's 35i cars. There is a single, twin-scroll turbocharger. Engineering editor Jay Kavanagh is out getting a coffee, so let's just go to the press release, "The exhaust streams leaving the two pairs of cylinders are kept completely separate as they flow through the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, taking a spiral path to the turbine wheel. This configuration results in very low exhaust back pressure at low engine rpm, and allows the energy of the exhaust gas pulses to be optimally managed and translated into powerful rotation of the turbine blades, without a delay in throttle response."

Got that? Good, there will be a quiz later. All that torque developed will be available at just 1,250 rpm, which should make it feel pretty damn ballsy off the line. Should you want to quash some of that ballsiness with extra weight, or live in the snow belt (or are convinced by a dealer you need it for some creative reason in Southern California), BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system will be available as an option.

QUIZ: What type of path does the exhaust streams take while traveling to the turbine wheel?

New 2012 BMW M5 Shows Off in Argentinian Ad

BMW argentina.jpg

By now, we've pretty much seen the 2012 BMW M5 from every angle possible and there's not a whole lot of discovery left except for how it drives. But there's still something about this car I'm confused / concerned / interested in so I've watched this video from BMW of Argentina about 11 times. Nothing new but some rolling footage.

New Six-Cylinder BMW 640i Coming to America

2012_bmw_6-series_actr34_ns_50311_1600.jpg

The rumor of a six-cylinder, N55-powered BMW 640i has been ongoing since the car was still in the prototype stage. Fuel economy, emissions blah blah blah. But when the car was finally announced, they were only talking V8. Albeit a twin-turbo 4.4-liter one cranking out 400 horsepower that turned our attention away from things like cost and efficiency.

But now our friends over at Autoblog have it on good authority that the 640i is still in the works, and destined for America. By September, your local dealer will be able to order you a 2012 BMW 640i, they say, with the N55 six-cylinder which will include start / stop. (A feature we found nearly intolerable on a Euro spec BMW X3.) AB's Euro Editor also says that xDrive is confirmed as an option for the US-Spec V8 6-Series.

While a little heavy, perhaps, the N55 should be more than sufficient for the Newport Beach and Sunset Strip who have no use for 400 horsepower.

2012 BMW M5: 560 Horsepower vs 553 Horsepower

So there's been some confusion with the 2012 BMW M5 and its horsepower rating. Some people are reporting 553 horsepower, others 560. 560 is bigger and puts the M5 above the CTS-V in the horsepower war. The genesis of the confusion stems from two things: 1) The first information released was leaked and incomplete. 2) The information released was, primarily, in European units of measure. This means kW and DIN horsepower instead of the way we like it. The two numbers in question were 553 (or 552 -- more on this later) or 560.

560 was the number released by the press kit alongside the 412 kW rating. 412 kW maths itself out to be 552.5 horsepower -- round how you will. Fine, we blame DIN. But then the US press kit came out touting-- wait for it -- 560 horsepower and 412 kW. Sigh.

So what gives? Our engineering guru Jay Kav splains it after the jump.

Horsepower is a devilish thing since not all horsepower is measured using the same yardstick. Ferrari uses Cavallero (CV); the Germans like DIN; the Japanese have in the past used a JIS standard. Yeesh.

We at InsideLine ignore such foreign horsepower ratings. To come up with a horsepower number that is equivalent to SAE horsepower, we have to dig a little deeper.

Instead of using whatever is supplied, we look for the power as reported in metric units known as kilowatts (kW). Kilowatts are the standard in the world of power measurement, but nobody in Americaland thinks in kilowatts. So we convert kW to SAE-sized horsepower.

Do this to the 2012 BMW M5’s rated power – 412 kW – and you get 553 hp. BMW claims 560 hp, even in US guise. So we called BMW to clarify. It turns out that the new M5 will, indeed, produce 560 hp (SAE) and not 553. It’s a similar situation with the company’s X5 M engine, which is rated at 555 hp worldwide, kilowatt rating --408-- be damned.

Spy Photos: 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe

w_BMW6erGranCoupe_BP_jun11_priddy2.JPG

These new spy photos of the 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe prove that, despite the 5 Series GT being a disappointment, BMW isn't done blurring lines. What we've got here is a latest-generation BMW 6 Series, but with some important differences, notably, four-doors. Odd for a coupe. Or, at least, it used to be odd for a coupe to have four doors until Mercedes-Benz went ahead and called the swoopy CLS a four-door coupe and it sold like hotcakes to dentists and lawyers and housewives from Miami to Beverly Hills. Clearly there was a market for a slightly less functional sedan with stylish body work. Audi noticed, too, and dropped the A7. And then there's the Panamera.

Finally, though, it appears BMW has caught up with the trend, finally showing a prototype of the 6 Series Gran Coupe which was greenlit last July.

We expect the four door 6 Series to offer the same engine as the 6 series in the U.S. which is a 4.4-liter V8 making 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. Transmission options are a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. Starting price for the 2012 BMW 6 Series is $83,875.

And don't count out an M version with, based on the 2012 BMW M5, 553 horsepower and a manual or dual-clutch transmission.

And here's the concept from Beijing last year.

BMW X5 Mansory 2011

The striking appearance of the Mansory BMW X5 is assisted by a wide range of performance kits for the standard engines. The highlight is a vigorous upgrade for the BMW X5 M aggregate. Approximately 670 hp /493kW and a torque of 950 Nm at a rate of 5900 Umin (series: 555 hp / 408 kW and 680 Nm at a rate of 1500 – 5650 Umin) results from the use of a completely new exhaust system along with headers as well as optimised engine electrics. Thanks to these changes, the 4×4 accelerates in only 4.2 seconds to a speed of 100 km/h and achieves a maximum speed of 300 km/h.

MANSORY provides an alloy rim especially made to meet the requirements of the BMW X5, which is significantly better for handling and additionally sharpens the vehicle’s optics. The silver monoblock cast wheels with the description M10 are fitted with tyres of the dimension 315/25R23, which guarantee proper grip. In connection with lowering the vehicle’s centre of gravity by 40mm with sport springs on the front axle as well by 40 mm on the back axle with adjusted vehicle height, the masculine appearance of the MANSORY BMW X5 M is glamorously rounded off. In addition, the sports suspension improves handling. A sports break system with larger discs and multi-piston brake callipers is already being tested.
